After selecting one tree to adopt for the month of March, please let us know:

  • The address or specific location of your tree (we will be creating a map of our adopted trees)
  • What your tree looks like or what type of tree do you think it is (You do not need to know the specific kind of tree yet just describe it if you can)
  • What is around your tree (Are there other trees, is there a building, is it on the street, etc.)
  • Why did you chose that particular tree?

My tree is located in the middle of some bushes in front of 319 S. 44th St. My tree is brown. It is 25 FT. tall. Its branches sway in the wind. It's skinny. It has lots of branches that stick out. It is around 6 ft. from our porch and is surrounded by a medium sized Evergreen bush that measures about 15 feet long and 10 feet wide. We chose our tree because we see it 95% of every day,and as I said it is only 6 ft. away from our porch and it is still living.

I love seeing branches sway in the wind. When the wind moves through branches it often makes a lot of neat noises.

My tree is located at 4627 Osage Ave. It's bark is rough, it has the shape of an eye on it, it has two trunks, one is tall and one is short. It is surrounded by plants (lilies), bushes, other plants and a sitting stone! It has big pink flowers! (magnolia)

The eye shape can be found on many trees particularly in the bark on the trunk of the tree. Do you have ideas about what caused that pattern on the trunk?

My tree is located in along a row of other trees at the corner where 47th Street and Larchwood Avenue. My tree is dark brown. It doesn't have any leaves yet because it is still winter. My tree is very, very tall. My tree is also very thick. At the bottom there is a small patch of grass. I chose this tree because it is right in front of my house and all the other trees are too far away from my window. I even gave it a name: Touchie. I named it Touchie because it's branches touch my bedroom window at night when it is really windy.

I'm so glad you introduced us to "Touchie". It's a great name. Did it ever scare you when it made noise on your window at night? Naming our trees can be fun because we do have a relationship with them.

The location of my tree is our backyard, between three streets, Spruce, 43rd and Pine. It has no leaves right now, but in the summer and spring it will have beautiful pink crape myrtle flowers. It is close to ferns and hydrangeas. It is very skinny and it has lots of branches. In the summer I climb it and it has a good branch for sitting on.

The fact that you can sit on the branches makes me think it must be a big strong tree! I'm excited to see all the flowers come out this Spring!

My tree is located at South Melville St. It's near my house. It has no leaves but there's flowers that are blooming on my tree. It's between a small tree that has leaves and a big tree that has no leaves.

It's so interesting that your tree has flowers already. I wonder what made it bloom early? Some scientists are tracking when trees get their buds and when they flower so they can think about the weather and climate changes that are affecting the different plants around us.

My tree is at 1004 south 45th street. My tree is very tall with lots of branches. My tree has no leaves and is still alive. My tree has very big roots and feels very rough. My tree is on the sidewalk and across from a playground. My tree is not the only one on the block. It has lots of surrounding trees.I chose this tree because it is right outside my house.

Science Teacher

Yes just because a tree doesn't have leaves does not mean that it is dead. Most trees are without leaves right now in Philadelphia but are still very much alive. I'm glad you thought about that.

My tree is located by my moms house on 24th Street right next to Kimball St. It is a small tree with no leaves. It has a lot of branches, but is skinny like a pencil. Little buds are all over the branches, they are about to become leaves. My tree is on a sidewalk surrounded by buildings and houses. There were no other trees around it. I chose it because it's the nearest tree on my block and it will be easy to watch.

I like the use of simile in your description: "skinny like a pencil". That's a fun way to poetically share about your tree!

1. My tree is located between Baltimore Avenue and Larchwood Street in my back alley way.

2. My tree has lots of branches that stick out of it. My tree does not have any leaves on it but in the fall the leaves change color. My tree is really long. It is as big as my house! My tree is a mature tree. It is so big that I can't even fit my arms around it!

3. There are many things around my tree. One of the things around my tree is a big bush. The bush is half the size of my tree! Also there are cars, houses and a fence around my tree. There is a little sapling next to my tree too.

4. I chose this tree because it is right next to my house. I also picked it because I can just look right out the window and my tree will always be there.

I am so impressed that you are using the correct terms for the different parts of the life cycle of trees: "mature tree", "sapling". Very good!

The tree that I picked is located on the 400 block of Holly street in Philadelphia. It is across the street from my house. I picked this tree because it is the tallest one amongst all the others. It is at least 15-20 feet tall and has many branches and leaves. The leaves are still green but appears to be fading and wrinkled due to the cold weather. My tree is very thick. It is so thick that I cannot put my arms around it! There are many houses in my neighborhood. There is at least fifteen houses located in my street and at least six trees that surround each other. I choose this particular tree because it is the tallest one amongst all the others and looks livelier compared to the other too.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:03:36 am

It must be big if you can't put your arms around it! I like that you used the criteria of "livelier" to pick your tree. I am wondering what made it seem "livelier" to you?

My tree is located on Pine street between45 and 46. It is rough and the bottom branch is thin. The tree have dry leaves and in the back of
the tree there is a yellow apartment. The tree is brown and it has a little scratch on it.I picked this tree because it was near my apartment.

Science Teacher

The tree I chose is across the street around the neighbor's house. It has slim, thin branches but is about 15 inches wide. I chose it because I can see it from my living room window. It doesn't have leaves yet, but it will soon grow them. Right now, (6:33 pm Monday) it is covered with moss. My tree's location is at Pine and 42nd street, It is a mature tree, standing well over 30 feet. It is a giant compared to us humans.
