After selecting one tree to adopt for the month of March, please let us know:

  • The address or specific location of your tree (we will be creating a map of our adopted trees)
  • What your tree looks like and what kind of tree you think it might be (You do not need to know the specific kind of tree yet just describe it if you can, I encourage you to bring a picture/drawing to class)
  • What is around your tree (Are there other trees, is there a building, is it on the street, etc.)
  • Why did you choose that particular tree?

When submitting a comment please put your room number and assigned letter instead of your name!

My tree is at 1000 block of S 47th Street near Chester.
It is a small young tree with no leaf in winter.
It is in the a small yard with grass and plants around it.
I chose this tree because it is a tree I my family planted.

It's fun to watch a tree grow together as a family!

My tree is on Baltimore Ave. on the 4200 block of baltimore. It has four main branches it is a Sycamore tree. It is a tall tree and it's been there for a long time. It does not have any leaves right now. And it's on the sidewalk so there are some houses around it and there are also other trees around it and cars.

How long is a long time do you think? Also what does it look like near the base of the tree? Big trees often have roots that are pushing up or breaking up the sidewalks.

My tree is right in my house. My tree is tall, has lots of branches, and has lots of wood.It also has lots of leaves. There is my house in front, sidewalk on the bottom, and the street in back of it.I chose this tree because it's easy to see and it is right in front of our house.

Science Teacher

So are you saying it has a lot of wood because it has a lot of branches? It makes me think of the story we read where the people cut some branches of the trees now and then for firewood.

1.The tree is located on Saint Marks Square.
2.My tree is a brown Shad, 11 years old, missing a branch, medium height.
3. This is street tree in front of a house. There are other trees on the street.
4. This tree was planted in memory of a wonderful woman who took care of all the children on the block.

How nice that the tree was planted in memory of someone special. There are lots of trees that are planted for this reason. Sometimes when people get married, sometimes when a baby is born, sometimes to celebrate the life of someone who is no longer with us.

1 my tree is in 46th in Hazel Ave.
2 my tree is big, has big holes, big roots.
3 there is a trash can, a sapling and houses around my tree.
4 I chose this tree because it looks old and good to observe.

I appreciate that you are using the term "sapling" that is a very specific and scientific term!

1. My tree is on Osage Avenue.
2. It is in front of my house planted in the sidewalk.
3. It is an old tree taller than are house. It has a few brown leaves on it. It has vines on it.
4.I choose that tree because it is in front of my house and I like it.

Science Teacher

Do you think that the vines are good for the tree, bad for the tree or don't matter to the tree? Sometimes plants can have a complicated relationship with other plants around them.

My tree is located between Walnut street and 43rd street. My tree look small and it have one apple on it, which someone put it there. My tree is surround by a big, big, big apartment building and car. I choose this tree because I walk by it to school every day. I could observe it every day.

Choosing a tree you could check in with everyday was smart! Now you can really notice if things change or if there is something new going on with your tree!

1. In my backyard. In the garden.
2. It is a dogwood tree. It is small. You cannot climb on it because it does not have strong branches. There are no leaves on it because it is winter.
3. Mulch, rocks, bushes, vines, and a wether vane .
4. because my mom and I plated it.

Science Teacher

I love that you can enjoy a tree you planted with family! You are right that it probably would not support any climbing. Dogwood flowers are beautiful when they come out, I can't wait for Spring!

1. My tree is in the middle of my backyard on the south side. Our house is on the 200 block of south 45th street.
2. My tree has vines and ivy growing up the trunk. The tree is tall
and brown with rugged bark.
3. There are other trees, vines, and grass in the yard.
4.I chose this tree because it has green vines.

Science Teacher

Some vines can be very interesting to observe in terms of how they interact with the tree and even the buildings around them. They are thin but strong plants.

1) I adopted a Japanese Flying Dragon tree. It is located on the corner of 46th and pine street.

2) My tree is big and pointy with long branches that have points on them. Every summer orange fruit grow on it.

3) My tree is next to the sidewalk, two other trees, a rose bush and my house.

4) I picket this tree because I like the way it defends itself. And lots of birds are in it.

This sounds like a very unique tree! I also like your reasoning for picking it!

1. Location of the tree:
I adopted a tree on the side of our house at the corner of Locust Street, where it meets the Melville Street.

2. Description of the tree:
a) It is a large tree, which is as high as the building, where it is located at.
b) The tree still has a lot of leaves and looks beautiful ! So, I named it the "Evergreen Tree."
c) The tree has bark that is peeling off.
d) It has lots of branches.

3. Surroundings:
a) There is a 3 story building behind the tree.
b) There is a bush in front of the tree.
c) There are big rocks at the bottom in front of the tree.
d) There are fern surrounding the bottom of the tree.

4. The reason for choosing the tree:
a) My "Evergreen Tree" has bark peeling off and looks like cinnamon sticks. I found it to be very interesting !
b) This is the biggest tree in my corner that still has green leaves. Most of the other big trees have already lost tons of leaves.
c) I am hoping to observe this tree for a month to understand how a tree loses its leaves.

I'm so impressed with how you organized your thinking and information here! I think you will learn a lot about trees and you might be able to notice differences between your tree and the other trees that might contribute to why it held on to its leaves longer.

I adopted a tree in front of my apartment. I can see it from my balcony and I watch it every day.
1) My tree is at 4532 Pine Street
2) My tree is a big one. It looks like an Oak tree, with lots of branches. Its trunk is huge with some pealing of barks. There is no leaves my tree now. In the last spring the tree was covered with leaves.
3) My tree is on the street. It is in front of a house. It is very next to the road.
4) I chose this tree as it is just in front of my house and in the spring I saw lots of birds and birds nest on it. Lots of leaves means it cleans the air and thus reduce air pollution.

Science Teacher
3/8/2013 09:39:31 am

You're very right about it helping to clean the air! We will talk more about that towards the end of the month, so I'll try to remember you have prior knowledge about the benefits of trees in the city!

The name of the tree I picked is a rhododendron. The place where it is is in front of 4533 Larchwood Ave. Right now it's leaves are light green. I chose my tree because it's right in front of my house and I don't have to walk anywhere to see it.

Science Teacher
3/8/2013 09:41:17 am

If it's leaves are light green now, do you think they will stay light green throughout the seasons, or will the color change? It will be interesting to find out!

My tree is big its trunk is very thick but the branches are thin and the leaves are very very small. The tree looks old.I like to peel the old bark off.But sometimes it has bugs in it and grosses me out! That is the also the reason I chose this tree.It is located in front of my house. Two trees are on the side of it and it's next to the street.

Science Teacher
3/10/2013 11:48:33 am

Lots of interesting observations! I'm glad you said the tree "looks" old, because unless you know it's age and know it is actually old, it's better to say it just looks that way. Also it isn't surprising to find bugs near trees or in tree bark. Although some bugs can actually hurt the tree so I'm curious which bugs they are!

The tree I chose is in my neighbor's backyard. The tree is bigger than a 3 floor building. It is about 2 times bigger. The branches reach all the way to our backyard. The tree I chose has other tree around it. It has buildings around it. It is in a backyard. I chose that tree because it is the biggest tree in the neighborhood of my house. It is a very impressive tree. It has big branches. Once when there was a hurricane, me and my mom thought it would fall down on my room but it did not!

My tree is in my backyard. It is light brown, lots of branches. In the Summer cherries grow. Around it is a garden, a patio, flowers and table and chairs. I chose it because my dad planted it for me when I was born!
