After selecting one tree to adopt for the month of March, please let us know:

  • The address or specific location of your tree (we will be creating a map of our adopted trees)
  • What your tree looks like and what kind of tree you think it might be (You do not need to know the specific kind of tree yet just describe it if you can, I encourage you to bring a picture/drawing to class)
  • What is around your tree (Are there other trees, is there a building, is it on the street, etc.)
  • Why did you choose that particular tree?

When submitting a comment please put your room number and assigned letter instead of your name!

The location of my tree is South 47th street. My tree is about 3 meters tall. And at the moment, it has no leaves. It has a trunk about 5 inches thick. My tree is right in front of my house. There are other plants and trees around it. I chose this tree because it was right in front of my house so I could take notes on it easily. I can just look out my window and see it.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:18:55 am

Isn't nice to see trees outside your window. I always love looking out and enjoying the trees. Especially once they have their leaves and it's so pretty and green!

1. My tree is in West Philly, in between Locust and Walnut st, and in my backyard.
2. My tree is a Cherry Tree. It is bumpy, big, and dark brown, and it is about 1 foot wide at the trunk and about 30 feet tall.
3. There are some big plants that are bunched together in the middle of our backyard next to the tree. Four trees are bordering the back of the backyard next to the fence. The Cherry Tree is behind our house, but we are in row houses so many other houses are next to us.
4. I chose this tree because it is right in my backyard. Also, it is a very big tree and I like big things.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:20:39 am

Big things are fun! It's interesting to picture all of those plants bunched together like you are describing. Don't forget if you'd like you can make a drawing of it or take a picture of it, so we can all see what you mean.

My tree is located in my backyard. The nearest cross streets are Springfield and 46th streets. My tree is big and very tall. It is thick and sturdy. In the Fall acorns fall from it. In the summer it gives lots of shade. My tree is in my backyard, behind my house and across from another backyard. Around it are grass, flowers, and a stone bench. There is another tree like it a few feet away. I chose this tree because it is right in my backyard and I like how it looks.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:26:09 am

It's interesting that you said it's NOT shady. Is that because of the branches being bare, or even when it has leaves is it not very good for shade? Also I like that you said "at the moment". That indicates to me that you understand that the tree will continue to grow and there may be changes in how close the plants are to each other in the future! Great job!

3/5/2013 05:58:15 am

My tree is on 45th street in my backyard.

My tree is tall with alot of branches on it. It has one broken branch.

My tree is in my back yard near my swing set.

I picked my tree because it is in my back yard and it is beautiful when it
blooms.

My tree is in front of our house on the 4400 block of Spruce Street. It is between the sidewalk and the street. It is very tall, and the branches hang over our house. It has poles through its the bottom of its trunk. The branches are long. I chose it because it is right in front of my house and because it has poles in it, which I thought were interesting.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:33:12 am

I do think your tree sounds very interesting to study and observe. Some people worry when tree branches get too close to a house or building. I'd like to see a drawing or picture of these poles if that's possible. If you can draw or print a picture, bring it to science class!

My tree is near Walnut St and 40th St. It is on a hill next to the library. It is almost twice as big as the library itself. From the side, it looks like a half tree because it is right next to the library and can't grow that way. From the front, it looks like a half oval. At the moment, it looks dull because it doesn't have leaves and its bark is sopping from the rain. I chose this tree because I like to sit under it during the summer. It gives nice shade and you can relax under it.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:38:07 am

119D
3/7/2013 02:33:07 am

My tree is located in the school backyard on 42nd and Locust. It is huge, has no leaves yet but has tiny red buds, which look like cherries. So I named it Cherico. There is grass around it, a fence and a playground. I chose it because I love to climb it and I feel very happy when I am on the top. It is my most favorite tree in the world!

Science Teacher

seriously?I pick that tree and you copy me?I don't apprecieate that very much.but I like that name!

Science Teacher
3/8/2013 09:49:14 am

It's okay to observe the same tree! You both have different reasons for choosing the tree and the observations you're making are sure to be different because different things about it will stick out to each of you. Also you could coordinate observing it on different days so you can really watch for changes or things happening with your shared tree, if you wanted.

119V
3/9/2013 07:35:58 am

I'm sorry.I did'nt mean to hurt your feelings.I was just kinda angry that you copied me.

3/7/2013 03:03:23 am

My tree is right in front of my house. My tree is young and thin with bare branches [because it's winter] and my tree has two poles to support it.It is on a street so it has buildings and cars and other trees and mean people throw trash on it.I chose this tree because it is special to me because it has my placenta under it.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:41:20 am

You have a personal connection to this tree so I can understand why you chose it and care about it. I'm sorry to hear that people are throwing trash around it. Maybe putting up a sign would help them to remember not to do that, but you want to be careful that any sign put up doesn't just end up blowing away and becoming trash itself.

My tree is in my front yard which is on 42nd Street near Baltimore Ave. The tree has big, shiny leaves, and is not very tall. It's almost up to the second floor window. Most of its leaves are green, but some of them are brown. My tree has ivy, sometimes flowers, and smaller trees around it. It is also pretty close to a building (my house). I chose this tree because it is near my house and it is very pretty when the seed pods pop out of the flower.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:43:05 am

Sounds like a very lovely tree. Keep an eye on the tree so you can see the changes start to happen and notice when the flowers, leaves, and seed pods start to come out.

3/7/2013 06:12:56 am

1.My tree is located in front of my house on Melville St.

2.My tree is big and tall. It's dark brown with no leaves and with a lot of branches. It looks dry and very bare. Some of its barks fell onto the ground.

3.There are other trees near it. It's located on the sidewalk of a residential street.

4.I picked this tree because it is in front of my house and because it is convenient for my observation.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:44:55 am

I'm glad you were looking carefully and noticed the bark coming off. This is typical of many trees, the bark will crack and break off as it grows.

119G
3/7/2013 08:44:25 am

1. The tree is near 42nd and Pine St.
2. The tree has a brown trunk, big roots, lots of buds, white branches, is bumpy, has thin branches, and the trunk is about a foot wide.
3. It is between trees, dirt, the street, and the sidewalk.
4. I chose this tree because it is big, growing well, and nothing lives in it except some bugs.

Science Teacher
3/7/2013 10:46:48 am

Nothing lives in it now, but do you think other animals might live in other parts of the tree? What about birds, chipmunks or squirrels? Also there may be organisms living under ground around the roots of the tree that we just can't see! Check and see if you notice other animals around your tree this month.

108Q
3/7/2013 10:33:08 am

My tree is on 229 south 44 street. My tree is tall, wide, does not have leaves, it is brown and it is infront of my house. My tree is on the sidewalk, there is a house next to it and there are other trees around it. I chose this particular tree because it is infront of my house so I can observe and take notes to see how my tree is changing and I can also see through my window at any moment.

My tree is in my front yard.
It has no leaves.
It has lots of buds.
There is soil around my tree.
It is tall. It is one and half stories tall.
I chose it because it is closest tree.
It is beautiful in Spring.

Science Teacher
3/8/2013 09:51:27 am

I'm so glad you mentioned the soil! Soil is a very important part of what a tree needs to survive and be healthy. Also trees actually help hold our soil in place so it doesn't run into our water systems like streams and rivers!

119V
3/8/2013 02:37:30 am

My tree is on 42nd Locust Street. It is in the Penn Alexander backyard.
It is a blooming tree. It has lots of pinkie red buds on it.
It had a branch chopped down.
It is in a park. There are other trees around it.
I choose the tree because there is a branch cut off, and if the tree is not fully developed it may be better to adopt.

Science Teacher
3/8/2013 09:54:13 am

I like that you are thinking about what tree you could help the most by adopting it and observing it. Trees that are damaged or young trees that are still growing are often more likely to need looking after. Also trees that are in parks may need more attention to be sure that people visiting or using the park are respecting the tree and not treating it like they shouldn't.

119V

Japanese Maple trees.

Science Teacher
